Domain Name spammers

I seem to get emails on a regular basis from customers asking about this email or that letter which states that their domain name is about to expire or their contact details are in dispute.

The wording in these letters from companies like the "Domain Registry of America" tends to be misleading suggesting that if you don't renew with them you will lose your domain. In 99.9% of the time this is just a misrepresentation of the truth in order to grab your business. Usually at a higher cost to you than through your existing supplier. Having had a few customers fall for the Domain Registry of America's (DOA) tactics I had the pleasure of speaking to the people at the company who claim that they are doing a service for the community. Interesting take on life. If you do get a email or letter from any of the following be sure to contact your domain registrar before handing over your hard earned cash:

Domain Registry of America Domain Registry of Canada

(I will list others as they come to light)

More recently we've started getting spammed by companies that look like they are attempting to steal your account details by suggesting that your contact information is incorect or in dispute. This is a phishing email looking to get your login details and hijack your domain or your credit card details. As a word of warning never click on a link inside an email. You are far better off typing the url of the site into the browser yourself.

Here is a copy of a recent phishing email received disguised as a contact information dispute from enom. The real url is a russian url. Be careful.
